Our Roots

The roots & Blessings of Astanka Yoga Mandir) starts from the 20th century & is blessed by India’s modern time great spiritual master H.H.Swami Sivavnada Maharaj

( Founder - Divine Life Society ).


Yogic training was pioneered at the centre  by Mrs.Selvam Kalyansunderam B.A(Hons)(Barrister -at -law, Attorney -at-law,) coming  from a  reputed Yogic tradition  headed by Her Holiness Swami Sivananda Satchidananta Mathaji ,first lady disciple of H.H.Swami Sivananda Saraswathi ,The founder of Divine Life Society, Rishikesh Himalayas, India.


H.H.Swami Sivananda Saraswathy (1887-1963)disciples numbered many and several generations of them through their  dedication  brought yogic knowledge to the western world along with the East.

There are many who promote and projected the yoga knowledge to the world. Teaching Asanans, Pranayama, and different type of meditation and Vedanta  in a highly professional  in a systematic manner.


Some of the disciples of Swami Sivannada are:

H.H.Swami Sivananda Saraswathi Mathaji (1907-1978) Founder of Divine Life Society, Sivananda Thopovanam -Tricomallee -Sri Lanka and H.H.Swami Satchidananda (1914-2002) founder of Integral Yoga Centre, both through  their joint tireless effort introduced this magnificent yogic culture to many regions in Sri Lanka.

This excellent culture received impetus and  promoted interest in  Sri Lanka and Yogic culture  grew tremendously in Sri Lanka during the sixties and seventies .


The torch of knowledge on Vedanta and meditation and yoga practice’s was carried forward by  Mrs.Selvam Kalyansunderam the disciple of H.H.Swami Sivananda Saraswathi Mathaji.in Sri Lanka another ardent disciple named  Sri Chaitanyananda Natha Saraswathi founder of Sri Rajarajewary Peetam(www.srividya.org) carried the knowledge to the West.


This situation underwent fluctuations but from the early nineties with the founding Youth League for Sanandhana Dharmic Perception (YLSDP), Yoga Mandhir,  the revival of yogic culture grew in Colombo -Sri Lanka.


The Hatha yoga classes in Colombo revived in nineties.

A  large space was allocated at the residence  of  Srimati Selvam Kalyanasunderam,No -3 Ridgeway place, Colombo -04   to conduct yoga classes and lectures, facilities to establish libraries also was taken .The centre was named as Yoga Mandir. Sweeping revival of interest in learning and practicing yoga.


H.H.Swami Datta Ramagiri (Madathipathi of Sri Thevani Amman Devasthanam) taught Hatha yoga at the centre when he was visiting Colombo for nearly a decade.

The yogic sessions was supervised by competent yoga masters and frequently yoga experts came from abroad.


Kriya Babaji Yoga

The year 1992 gave a great impetus to the learning of Yogasanas and meditation under the direction of Dr.S.Ramanathan popularly known as Acharya Swami Ram, who was an exponent in the Kriya Babaji Yogic Tradition and a disciple of Yogi S.A.A.Ramaiah, with his leadership in this direction there was an upsurge in enthusiasm for yoga.

A system was devised to benefit all .His explanatory talks provided the real glimpse into this great human tradition-Hath Yoga.

Acharya Swami Ram is at present in Canada serving and promoting the Kriya yoga tradition. He established his own institution named holistic yoga  centre.  (www.holisticyoga.org)
